Finding Profitable Niche Topics within a Huge Topic

Within the blogging and online business, the riches are in the niches. Working within a smaller niche topic is always best. It’s less overwhelming, less work, and easier to build a dedicated audience of followers for your blog.

Remember, you’re not trying to take over the world here (or maybe you ARE… … if so, good luck to you!). You’re looking to build a small, extremely efficient business, that works for you, that’s fun to do.

You’re Gonna be a Rock Star for Your Audience

Think about the biggest rock stars in the world. They make MILLIONS of dollars, and tour the whole world, getting tens of thousands of people at every concert. On a global scale, however, even THEY only really appeal to a relatively small audience.

Not everyone in the world likes ANY band, or EVERY band, either.  That’s completely impossible.

The population of the world is currently estimated to be approximately 7.5 billion people.

If a band had a fan base of around 20 MILLION people, it may seem like a HUGE audience, right? When in fact, only 0.27% of people in the world follow them.

‘Niching down’ is the art of looking within a large market, and finding a small profitable niche section of an audience, to target and turn into screaming fans.

Putting this into perspective for a moment, even if 99.74% of the people on this planet ABSOLUTELY HATED THEIR GUTS, it wouldn’t affect them. They’d still be multi-millionaires and wouldn’t give a shit what any of the other 99.74% of the world thought.

Why would they, when they’ve got a dedicated, ‘small’ (20 million people) audience that LOVES and worships them? Their dedicated fans will spend hard-earned money to buy the music, clothing, merchandise, and even pay for concert tickets to see the band play live. And, that’s how this all works!

You’re going to find your own little corner of the world to be involved in, and become a valuable, useful part of that world, for your audience. You’re going to become an absolute rock star for the people that will be following you.

Imagine your very own crowd of screaming, loyal, adorable fans. They believe in you, and can’t wait to buy your next product, or recommendation. That’s a powerful thing, and that’s why the riches are in the niches.

  • So, how do you find these smaller niche topics?
  • Where are these little worlds of wonder?
  • How do you know which niche topic could make you money online?
  • More importantly, where do you START looking for a niche topic?

I’m glad you asked, lets get busy.

Where to Start When Finding a Niche Topic for Your Blog

The best way to start when looking for a niche topic, is to start with the shortest possible keyword for your topic. This is a one word keyword, which we call the ‘seed keyword’. For example, if you were looking at starting a blog about wrestling, then ‘wrestling’ would be your seed keyword. It’s completely unspecific, and will not produce much in the form of valuable search results or content.

Starting with your seed keyword will allow you to uncover EVERY topic searched for, that’s related to that keyword. You’ll then work your way down the list, into bigger long tail keywords, finding smaller, profitable niche topics.

I call this process ‘niching down’.

I’m going to show you how to start with an absolutely HUGE topic, then break that topic down into several smaller niches that you might want to start a blog about. This literally only takes a few minutes to do. It’s pretty easy, but extremely effective and valuable research. It will help you decide EXACTLY which section of the audience you want to target.

So how do you find a smaller, but profitable niche, where you can make money online?

It’s all in the long-tail keywords.

Long Tail Keywords

‘Long Tail Keywords’ are search terms used in search engines, made up of more than one word. The more words used, ‘longer the tail’. A keyword with a longer tail, is much more specific. The longer the keyword, the more specific it gets.

There’s a direct relationship between keywords and search volume. The more specific the keyword, the smaller, and more specific an audience becomes.

The trick is to find very specific long tail keywords, for a very specific niche topic audience, that’s still has enough search volume that you can make money with that audience.

Too specific, or too much of a niche, and the audience could become too small to generate good income.

That’s not to say you can’t make money from very small, very specific audiences. You definitely can. In fact, if you can find a tiny audience that are dedicated to your product, and love you, then it’s extremely possible.

I myself have a niche site that I regularly earn a small amount of money from, because I’m very well known in that extremely small (in fact, minute) niche.

Why Find a Smaller Niche Topic?

Large topics are just simply GIGANTIC. It could be absolutely impossible for you to cover such a large blog topic, or marketplace.

So, in blogging we look for small profitable niche markets to work in, rather than taking on the entire world.

There are several reasons for doing so;

  1. It’s extremely hard to compete in a huge market.
  2. Producing content to cover every aspect of a huge topic is overwhelming, almost impossible.
  3. There’s only one you. As a 1trepreneur, you’ll find it hard keeping up with all the latest news and events regarding such a huge blog topic. Finding a small, yet profitable niche market within a larger topic, makes everything easier to manage, build, and produce content for.
  4. It’s easier to become extremely knowledgeable, focused, and an expert within a smaller niche market.
  5. You can’t please everyone. Making money in a smaller niche market is a lot easier than trying to provide everyone with everything.

An example of a Huge Market – Cars

As an example of a gigantic topic, let’s imagine for a moment, you decided to run a blog web site about EVERYTHING related to ‘cars’.

This car blog would need to include;

  • classic cars
  • new cars
  • used cars
  • sports cars
  • race cars
  • buying and selling cars
  • new and used car pricing
  • car parts
  • fixing all cars
  • car racing (this alone is a HUGE topic)
  • car wheels
  • modified cars
  • cars all over the world
  • car shows
  • car maintenance

Can you imagine how many people it would take to produce such a blog? I’ve never even seen such a huge web site. In fact, there’s probably a thousand good reasons why it doesn’t exist. It’s gotta be virtually impossible to do, even for large companies. I don’t think there’s a chance in hell of anyone being able to provide a quality blog for such a monstrous topic.

With the example above, even if you just took ‘car racing’ as a topic, there are HUNDREDS of different types of car racing to write about. You’d need a team of hundreds of people to pull this off.

So, from car racing, you would probably want to niche down EVEN FURTHER and specialize in a blog about a particular niche, such as Formula One, Indy Car Racing, Off Road Truck Racing, NASCAR, or something similar.

Or, what about just having a blog about all types of car racing in your local area?

Become a Specialist in a Niche Topic

So, you’re looking for a smaller section of your much larger topic.

You want to find a smaller niche topic, that still has a large enough audience to make it a profitable online business.

So with that in mind, let’s take a look at one of my most favorite toys in the whole world, and an absolute monster of a topic, Lego.


Niching Down: The Lego Lesson

Let’s imagine one of my 3 online business ideas, was to start a blog about Lego. I love lego (like, seriously, I LOVE it!). Let’s imagine that I wanted to start a blog about Lego, but I don’t know if it’s a good business opportunity, or where to even start.

The first thing I would want to know is what the search volume of the seed keyword is. This free tool gives a very quick overview of the potential size of this topic.

Using the free Keywords Everywhere google chrome extension, I see some amazing results.


‘Lego’ as a Seed Keyword has a Google Search Volume of 550,000 per Month in the USA

So, ‘Lego’ is a keyword with 550,000 local searches per month!

Lego is a MONSTROUS topic to consider blogging about. When searching for long tail keywords using a couple of free tools, it was REALLY EASY to come up with over 15-20,000 different keywords containing the word ‘lego’.

I’m gonna be looking for smaller niche markets within the Lego niche topic that might work out as a great blog idea. Just like I did in my article about choosing your best blog idea, we’re going to keep this keyword research quick and simple, because this is still preliminary basic research. You don’t want to spend weeks blogcrastinating over this, we’re going to out something we can do in just a few minutes. So, using the keywords everywhere google chrome extension, and, let’s get to it.

Quick Keyword Research Into Your Niche Market

I already know that ‘lego’ is a huge topic with a lot of keywords, so I’m stopping my search at around 15,000 keywords. This is going to give me a HUGE amount of data to start with. Once I’ve niched down from this list, I can always run enquiries using the keywords for my niche market, to find more keywords relevant to that niche.

So, once the keyword number hits around 15,000, I’ll hit ‘Stop Job’.

Then, I’m going to hit the link at the bottom right corner of the page (which is put there by the Keywords Everything extension), that says ‘Export CSV’.

Within a few moments, Google Chrome will automatically download a CSV file, which you can then open in Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, or your favorite spreadsheet software. Open up this file, and you’ll see your list of long tail keywords with all the metrics laid out in columns and rows.

Now you have something awesome you can REALLY work with!

Filter Your Keyword Results

I’m using Microsoft Excel in this example, but you can use any spreadsheet software you prefer.

Select the four cells at the top of the spreadsheet (Keyword, Vol, CPC, Comp). Right-Click on the cells, go down to Filter > Filter by selected Cell’s Value.


Remove the filter from the ‘Keyword’ Column. Now you are able to filter this list in any order you wish.

Reduce the Size of Your Long Tail Keyword List

Filter the list of keywords by Search Volume, from largest to smallest. Now delete any keywords with a search volume less than 1,000.

This brings my list of long tail keywords down from just over 10,000 results, to just 656 already.

Now I’m going to remove a few keywords I would never blog about.

Remove the Seed Keyword

For this niche, I know I would never target the keyword ‘lego’, so I’m deleting it from the list. Now I’m going to remove any other keywords, that I probably wouldn’t target.

Remove Irrelevent Keywords

Remove any keywords that are irrelevant to your market.

For example, my seed keyword generated the keyword ‘Legolas’, which is a character from Lord of the Rings. Not relevant to my market at all, so filter out any ‘Legolas’ keywords, and delete those from the list.

Shorten Your Keyword List Even More

I’m shortening this keyword list as much as possible, getting rid of any keywords I wouldn’t use.

Here’s some of the keywords I’m getting rid of, and why;

  • Legoland, Legoland Florida, Legoland Directions, Legoland Coupons, etc. People searching google for legoland are looking for park information.
  • Lego Store. I’m not going to open an online Lego store and try to compete with every toy store in America.
  • Lego Duplo. Not my thing. I’m an adult, I’m not going to blog about Duplo. There are plenty more niche markets to look at within this huge topic.
  • Lego Sets – Not specific enough, with how vast the range of lego sets is, we need a longer tail on this one.
  • Lego Movie 2 – I’m looking forward to this movie, too, but it’s TOO specific to an entire blog about, an the audience is looking for info on this movie, or trailers, etc.
  • Lego Sets at Target – this is people searching for what Target have in stock. If people are looking for lego sets at a store they are NOT searching for solutions a blog can offer them.

Look For Smaller Niche Markets Within Your Large Topic

The reason I chose such a huge topic for this example, is because I wanted to show you the opportunities of multiple niches within one market.

Within my main keyword list for the lego market I’m seeing several sub-niches that might be possible good blog site topics. Therefore, I’m going to filter out these into separate lists.

I have several different keyword sheets now, with different niche topics I COULD look into building a blog about;

Lego Video Games & Movies

I have a list of 43 different long tail keywords, regarding lego video games only, then there’s also the lego movies.

Consider the amount of content you could produce regarding the lego video game series, it’s a lot! Things such as walk throughs, secrets, cheat codes, etc, I believe you would be able to build a blog about this.

Lego Star Wars

I found around 65 long tail keywords relevant to lego star wars, and the lego star wars video games.

This is specific enough, but also a huge topic to write about. I don’t think you’d ever run out of lego star wars subjects, nor are they about to stop making lego star wars kits.

Lego Kit Genres

There are MANY and varied lego kit genres and brands out there I could write about. There’s Lego Classic, Lego Technic, Lego Ninjago, Lego Architecture, Lego Star Wars.

Lego Minifigures

A blog about nothing but Lego Minifigures? Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about the amount of figures out there:

There are at least 3655 different minifigures produced between 1975 and 2010 and the number of new minifigures per year is increasing rapidly. In 2010 more than 300 new minifigures were introduced.

I could definitely a blog about this niche market, all the characters involved, maybe stories about why they made that character. Or what about having blog members make up their own unique characters, and send you in photos? Maybe they could suggest it for you, and you could build the minifigure, and give it  more character.

What about an app where people could make up their own lego character as a unique avatar?

What if You Have More than ONE Seed Keyword?

This whole article is about taking a huge topic, and finding a smaller niche market You may have several seed keywords that are relevant to your niche, that each produce a list.

If so, combine these seed keyword lists into one master list, then sort them by search volume, and reduce the amount of long tail keywords in the ways I described above.

Aim for Niche Topic Lists of Around 50-100 Long Tail Keywords

As you can see from my Lego example, I started with a list of over 10,000 keywords.

Then, I reduced this HUGE keyword list, into MUCH smaller lists of less than 100 long tail keywords, all with a search volume of over 1,000, within a relatively short space of time.

Once you have your list of relevant long tail keywords for your topic, lets look at a couple of other tools that will dive a little deeper into these keywords. You need to find out how difficult it could be to rank for these keywords.
