For the past 4-6 weeks I have been sitting at my desk, typing like a madman, creating content for this ‘new’ blog. It’s a brand new, complete fresh start for the blog.

The truth is, it’s not REALLY a NEW blog. I’ve been ‘planning’ (re: procrastinating) to get this blog off the ground for a VERY long time.

Lately (due to an awakening I had a few months ago) for a couple of hours each day I’ve been smashing away, creating content for this new version of the blog. Patiently, I’ve been creating a lot of the articles and posts that will eventually make up the awesome new online business site.

I had almost everything ready. The basic layout and theme was there, a lot of the design work done, and even had some of the website layout set up, ready for the content.

And then I pulled the plug on it. I committed absolute blog suicide, and there was no stopping me.

Don’t believe me? Fine, don’t. Here’s what my site looked  a few moments ago;

“Why on EARTH did you do THAT??!”, I hear you cry.

Why I Murdered My Blog

Truth be told, up until very recently, this blog has been sitting around for a few years.

Back when I started, I wanted to start an awesome blog.  I wanted to teach people how to start a blog and make money online, but then something happened. Or to be completely honest, something didn’t happen.

I’d gotten so ‘busy’ with my own life, changing jobs, working on other ‘projects’. In reality I procrastinated for years, and didn’t get this blog off the ground at all.

When I started out, I genuinely wanted to help people and teach them exactly how to start a blog and make money online. I felt the need to teach as many people as I can, everything there is to know about building blogs, from the very beginning, click-by-click, day-by-day. There’s a lot to building a blog, from before you even make the decision on buying the domain name.

So (instead of building an awesome blog) I pottered around, procrastinated, and basically didn’t do anything with this blog for a few years.

I’d post mindset blog posts sometimes, whenever I found time or inspiration. The only person I was helping with those posts, though, was myself. My mindset blogs are mostly personal therapy, and motivation that I need, that I shared with the world.

I realized that my blog had become my own personal therapist.

The only person I was helping, was myself, and it was time to change that.

Failure To Take Action Has Consequences

I had failed to do the one thing that matters in any project at all. TAKE ACTION.

Occasionally I would get motivated for a month or two and change the theme, try a few design ideas without spending any money, then go back to procrastinating again.

So, 2-3 years after buying this domain and setting up WordPress, my blog idea was just that, an idea.

I had achieved nothing.

A New Web Host

Recently, after getting frustrated with the hosting company I had been loyal to for many years, it was time for a change.

When I changed hosts, some of the functions on the back end of the blog weren’t working properly, even thought he rest of my blogs, were. I took this as a sign, that it was time to change everything.

So I made a weird decision today, but it’s been strangely motivational. I decided to throw out everything, and start again from scratch. And I mean, throw out EVERYTHING.

Today, I deleted my site database, deleted ALL my site files, and installed a brand new WordPress installation on my server.

I’ve murdered my blog and started again completely from scratch.

While writing this article, I’ve been putting stuff together, and installing basic plugins for security. This is what the site looks like at the moment.

The Basic WordPress 2017 Blog Theme on Today

Starting from Ground Zero

It feels liberating. I’m excited to be right at the bottom again, building a brand new foundation. It feels great!

I kept telling myself I would document creating a blog from scratch, from day one, and what better way to do it, than with this one!

I can document the entire site being built from the ground up. I’ll show you guys how to build a WordPress blog website from scratch, the right way.

Sure, other people will show you how to start a blog in five minutes. You actually CAN start a blog in a  few minutes. I mean, it IS ACTUALLY POSSIBLE to do.

There are literally thousands of people out there with blog posts telling you how to start a WordPress blog.

They usually all say almost exactly the same thing.

How to Start a WordPress Blog (according to everyone else)

According to most of the blogs out there in the interweb (and there’s a LOT of them), starting a blog is really easy.

They’ll tell you it’s not easy, and that starting a blog takes a lot of hard work (everyone says this). The problem is, they then give you 3 or 4 ridiculously easy instructions to follow, to start your blog.

They usually go something like this;

  1. Decide what you want to blog about (duh).
  2. Buy a domain name and web hosting.
  3. Set up WordPress and choose a theme.
  4. Write articles that will be of interest to your audience.

Now, if you follow the above 4 steps, you will be able to start a blog. This is 100% true.

So what’s wrong with the above advise? I mean, if you want to start a blog about something, and I tells you how to do it, it’s good advice, right?

SURE IT IS! If you want to start a blog as a hobby, as a journal, with no intent of making money online whatsoever, the above instructions are EXACTLY how you do it.

The truth is, though, you could follow the above advice, start a blog, spend years on that blog, and get absolutely nowhere.

The truth is, when it comes to starting a blog to make money online, here’s a LOT MORE that goes into it. There’s a lot more thought and research that goes into that blog, even BEFORE you start the blog, or domain buying process.

How to Start a Blog to Make Money Online

Actually TEACHING you how to start a blog and make money online, is EXACTLY what I’m going to teach you to do, on this blog. Not just how to start a blog, ’cause that’s EASY. If that’s all you want to do, just follow the instructions above.

I’ll see you in a few years when you’re frustrated and wondering why it’s not working out for you. Trust me, I’ve been there. I have a blog that doesn’t make any money, too (it’s a passion project, more about this in time)

The thing is, there’s more to making money than just broadcasting random information on a subject online, and hoping that google will make you a millionaire. If that’s your approach, you may as well buy a lottery ticket. It costs less money, and the chances of winning are about the same.

From the decision on what to blog about (and if that topic is potentially profitable or not), choosing the right domain, what subjects to blog about, what niche topic to target, to creating the blog content, graphics, marketing and social media, there’s LOT OF THINGS TO LEARN.

I can definitely show you everything you need to know. Every tiny little spec of technical information about how to start a blog and make money online? I can teach you.

Also, the great part is, that ALL of this, is simple.

The great about this blogging thing is, you don’t have to be smart, or a nerd, to get this all done.

I Sucked At School, So Don’t Worry

Let me be 100% transparent here.

I left full time education at 15 years old, and went to trade school, to become an electrician.

I was an intelligent kid, but I had absolutely no respect for stupid rules, authority, or learning stupid stuff that didn’t matter to me.

It’s still yet to have been of any use to me, to know about dolmens, the anglo-norman conquest, the capital cities of European countries, or the names of Henry VIII’s wives.

Oh yeah, make me read Shakespeare again, because that shit was REALLY USEFUL in the real world.

If you’re from the USA, then it might help to explain I grew up in the U.K. If so, you can replace the above things with the American revolution, capital cities of states, and the content of the constitution. I’m sure you’ll agree these things have not been useful when applying for jobs, paying the bills, balancing a budget, financing a loan, etc.

I got pretty much D’s and F’s at school, I’d rather sit and have a fun conversation and laugh with the person next to me, than listen to another mundane minute of the stupid useless crap they were dictating to me.

So, if you think you need to be book-smart, or have had good grades to start a blog, there are no excuses there.

Anyone can learn to blog, and make money doing it.

It just takes a little common sense, and the ability to figure something out using your intuition as a human.

You’ll be writing for people like you, and building a blog for people just like you to use.

You don’t need a degree, or even much knowledge, to talk to someone in a friendly way, teach them something they don’t know yet, and help them.

Blogging for Money is Simple to Learn

With my great academic background described above, I hope to have put your mind at ease. If you think blogging or starting a website is too complicated for you. It isn’t.

I’ve learned a TON of interesting, useful, fun skills through blogging myself, and reading other people’s blogs.

Everything I have learned about building websites and blogging for money, can be taught to anyone. Nothing about it is technically difficult to learn, or to do.

I will, however, forewarn you that blogging for money is definitely simple, but it’s NOT easy.

It does take a few key skills, that will help you more than being super smart.

Blogging to make money online is not a get-rich-quick, or a five minute master plan.

A Few Key skills to Blogging

These are the main skills required to start a blog to make money online. I’m hoping you will have some, and be willing to develop the others.

Read through them, and possibly see if you believe you’re capable of using or learning these skills;

  1. Determination

Learning anything new requires you to be determined. You should know now, that this is going to take a lot of trying, testing, getting things wrong, experimenting a little, failing here-and-there, but eventually getting where you need to be. Learning anything new can be intimidating, but there’s no need to fear it, it’s just learning something new, like anything else in life you learned.

  1. The Ability to Take Action

You need to be able to take action, daily. I’ll be here for you, showing you the way, teaching you the things you need to know, but you need to take action regularly. It doesn’t matter how you feel that day, or how much you may doubt what you’re doing, just take action, no matter what. Keep moving forwards, every day.

  1. Creativity

No, I don’t mean you need to be able to write a damn poem, or play an instrument, let alone direct a play.

When blogging, it’s important to have an open mind to new ideas, and different ways of doing things. You’re going to be writing, but not things that are difficult to do. Just like the article you’re reading now, it started in my head, and ended up online. I’m hoping I’m helping you.

You can be creative in coming up with new ideas for blog posts, new places to post your social media, new places to visit and explore for your blog.

Hell, I need to be creative day-to-day, just to keep my kids amused, coming up with new games, and using their imaginations. I think a lot of people are more creative than they think.

  1. Follow Instructions

Listen, I suck at baking, okay. I can’t follow a recipe to save my life. I CAN, however, put furniture together. I know how to make skateboards from scratch, from pressing and gluing the individual plies together, shaping the board, to a finished product, because I wanted to make my own pivotboards.

Once, I learned to code in HTML and CSS overnight from a ‘for dummies’ book,  so I could do a coding test to get an interview as a junior web developer. It surprised the hell out of me when I got the interview! Needless to say I didn’t get the job. I didn’t deserve to anyway, but I was happy to have got the interview alongside more experienced coders, just by following some intructions in a book.

On this blog, I’m going to show you easy ways to do every single thing you need to do, in order to start that awesome blog, or maybe at least figure out why your current blog is failing.

If you can follow some basic directions, You’ll be absolutely fine. Allow me to remind you why I do this, and what it means to me.

I Started my Blog Again from Scratch Today, for You

Starting everything from scratch today, felt weird. I must admit I panicked just a little bit, before actually doing it. Once I hit the delete button, however, I felt liberated.

The 3 year mess that was sitting there can be started again, with a fresh canvas. It’s a new day.

I was able to throw down this blog post, you’re reading now. I’m hoping it’s been interesting to read, and useful for anyone that happens to come across my blog today. It may look a little plain, and unfinished at the moment, but you’ll see it piece together, and I’ll tell you why I’m doing, what I’m doing, as I do it, to document the entire process.

I’m hoping that my transparency, and documentation will show you that YOU CAN do this, too. Don’t worry, I’ll share all the failures with you, too. There will be some, there always is.

I just hope you’ll enjoy the ride with me.

Welcome to my new Blog.
